The Shrine on the Groń of John Paul II Peak

Groń of John Paul II is the only mountain peak in the world, which was named in honour of the Polish Pope. Karol Wojtyła often hiked to the tops of Jaworzyna (the previous name of Groń) and Leskowiec, even as a bishop. Equally often, he was a guest at a nearby mountain hostel. Jaworzyna was renamed at the initiative of the PTTK activists in Wadowice in 1981. And since 1st January 2004, after the publication in the Official Journal of Laws, Groń of John Paul II is the only officially valid name.

In 1991, on the tenth anniversary of the assassination of John Paul II, Bishop Jan Szkodoń consecrated the brick chapel of the "Cross of the People of the Mountains" on Groń. Even then, the intention of the chapel founders, Danuta Jakubowska and Stefan Jakubowski of Andrychów, was to build a chapel to celebrate the 75th birthday of Pope John Paul II. Irena and Stanisław Targosz donated land for its construction. In September 1995, the ceremony was held to consecrate the chapel at the top of Groń.

The erection of the chapel has completely changed the nature of hiking in this part of the Beskidy Mountains. Groń has become not only a destination of mountain tourism, but also a place of prayer. In July 2001, a monument dedicated to John Paul II and the Jubilee bell were consecrated there.

At present, in the surroundings of the chapel, called the "The Shrine on the Groń of John Paul II Peak", there are also the Stations of the Cross with carved stations, and several smaller chapels. Holy Masses, including the Midnight Mass, church fairs, and the ‘Following John Paul II's Routes’ horse rallies are celebrated there.
