Jarzy Kukuczka Memorial Exhibition Room

Jerzy Kukuczka, a famous Polish climber, was born in 1948 in Katowice, Poland, and lived there for many years. His parents came from Istebna, where he spent many holidays visiting his grandparents. He bought the house from his family in the '80s. In 1979-1987, as the second man in the world, he conquered the crown of the Himalayas - all 14 peaks rising above 8,000 meters above sea level. In 1989 he died, unfortunately, in the mountains, trying to reach the summit of Lhotse, while approaching its south face. At that time, tourists visiting Istebna started to ask about Kukuczka. They wanted to see the souvenirs from his expeditions and all objects connected with him. That is why, after a few years, his wife added a new room to the house, in which a variety of souvenirs after the famous climber were put. The Memorial Exhibition Room in the Wilcze farmstead is now Istebna's popular tourist attraction.
