PTTK Mountain Hostel on Turbacz

This mountain hostel lies at the altitude of 1283 m a.s.l. on the edge of the Wolnica clearing, a part of the Hala Długa, under the Torbacz Mountain in Gorce.

The first hostel on Turbacz was built in the Wisielakówka clearing thanks to the efforts of the Gorce PTT branch in 1925. Unfortunately, it was burned down as soon as in December 1933, most likely by poachers whose "business" was disturbed by the tourist traffic.

Work on the construction of the new hostel, this time on the upper edge of the Hala Długa, was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. In July 1943, the building was taken over by German troops, and in November of the same year it was burned down.

Construction of the current shelter was completed in 1958, and in 1990 it was modernised. It is a large stone building, which can accommodate 110 people. There are 2-, 3-, 4-, 6- and multi-person rooms, as well as a fully-equipped 3-room-suite with a bathroom and a kitchen, available for the guests. The hostel also has a fireplace room, a café, a ski storage room and a dining area with a restaurant offering all-day dining, including regional cuisine. The hostel accepts many different rebates and discounts, such as PTTK or Voluntary Blood Donor discounts. Discounts for larger groups and those who wish to stay longer are also granted. Detailed information can be found on the hostel's website.

The hostel is situated on the edge of the Gorce National Park and there are numerous nature trails in the surrounding area. Both foot and bike tourism, as well as horseback riding can be enjoyed here. In winter, trails for cross-country skiing are a major attraction of the area.

A PTTK Museum of Mountain Culture and Tourism was opened in 1980 in a small building in the woods not far from the hostel. In the Hala Długa clearing, where cultural sheep grazing takes place, a mountain shelter operates seasonally. From a terrace next to the entrance to the hostel, you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Tatra and Pieniny Mountains.

Each year, the hostel on Turbacz hosts WinterCamp, i.e. a training camp for tourists, who can gain here experience in winter camping and safe practising of outdoor sports.
