Wierchomla PTTK Mountain Shelter

This adventure tourism mountain hostel - PTTK Mountain Shelter is situated at an altitude of 895 m a.s.l. on a side mountain ridge of the Jaworzyna Krynicka Mountain Range, between the Runek peak and the Pusta Wielka peak in the Beskid Sądecki. The clearing, in which the shelter is situated, overlooks a beautiful landscape of the Radziejowa Mountain Range, and on a clear day you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Tatra Mountains.

The shelter was built in 1978 as part of the "Mountain Shelters - hostels for adventure tourism" concept. It was established through the efforts of Stanislaw Nowak, an activist of the Krynica PTTK branch, after whom the building was named. Compared to other buildings of this kind, the shelter has a rather unusual appearance as it was built by adapting a granary.

It is a wooden building including a spacious room with a fireplace, an observation veranda and rooms on the first floor, and next to it there is a so called 'Finnish cottage' with two lodging segments, each of which is designed for 4-6 people. In total, almost 40 beds in 2 -, 3 - and 4-bed rooms are available to tourists. The shelter also has a free-standing wooden Finnish sauna fired with beech and birch wood, a ski room, a drying room, a repair point for simple bike repairs, as well as a tourist kitchen and a bike garage. In winter, snowshoes can be rented there.

The shelter offers attractive stay programmes for families with children, as well as a number of discounts, e.g. for skiers, cyclists and guitarists. PTTK and Voluntary Blood Donor discounts, as well as others are also accepted. Integration stays for schools and businesses, feasts, sleigh rides, parties with lamb or pork roasting, as well as open-air wedding receptions are also organised here.

The shelter lies on the so-called 'Barani Szlak' (Sheep Trail), which means that the kitchen in the shelter's restaurant serves sheep cheeses, lamb and, seasonally, żętyca - a drink made of sheep milk whey. Moreover, it offers home-cooked meals based on own and regional products. The specialties of the shelter are kugel with goulash and apple pie, mulled wine and beer, as well as traditional liqueurs. You can also obtain honeydew and dandelion honey of the Wierchomla Apiary, oscypki made of sheep milk, as well as homemade bundz and lard, or forest mushrooms.

The shelter hosts many concerts, both official and spontaneous ones, poetry readings and slideshows. In spring or autumn, the Festival of Liqueurs is held, and in December there is a music Christmas Eve party and a New Year's Eve party organised. The shelter also invites to take part in anti-stress, integrative, team-building, terrain or safety in the mountains workshops.
